Abstract

As for the onion and potato crops as export crops. the average amount of virtual water exported for the onion crop was about 0.31 billion m3. and the total water footprint was about 0.52 billion m3. while the percentage of dependence on local resources as an average during the study period was about 161.96%. As for the potato crop. the average amount of virtual water exported was about 0.08 billion m3. and the total water footprint was about 0.29 billion m3. and the percentage of dependence on local resources was about 129.37%. Based on the results of the water demand model in Egypt during the study period 2005-2024. it was found that the total water use in the agricultural sector (in billion m³) had a water use elasticity of approximately 0.28. a positive value. Similarly. the total water use in the industrial sector (in billion m³) had a water use elasticity of approximately 0.033. also a positive value. The total water use in the drinking water and domestic sector (in billion m³) had a water use elasticity of approximately 0.108. a positive value. The population (in millions) had a population growth elasticity of approximately 0.072. a positive value. Finally. the cultivated area (in million feddans) had a crop area elasticity of approximately 0.02. a positive value. This demonstrates the direct relationship between these variables and water demand. and the increase was statistically significant at the 5% and 1% levels.
